West Virginia
West Virginia separated from the state of Virginia while the Civil War was raging, and became a state in the year 1863. This state is found in the Appalachian mountain range, giving rise to its nickname of The Mountain State, and it offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation, including mountain biking and hiking. The biggest industries in the state also relate to its natural resources, including coal mining and logging. Approximately three-quarters of the state is covered in forest.
